Chapter

Seventeen

The dwarves’ coachman pulled the carriage to a halt in the busy stableyard of another inn. They were still within the borders of human-ruled territory; however, the quality of the property clearly indicated that the jeweler’s wife had convinced Master Flint to part with additional coin to ensure the non-human guests were treated with all due respect. Indeed, the nattily garbed doorman favored the dwarves and the two fae with a professional smile of cool welcome.

They trooped indoors to be greeted by an unctuous proprietor who called for servants to carry their distinguished guests’ luggage to the rose room and the jonquil suite where, he promised, they would be served a fine repast. The jeweler and his mate gladly took the jonquil suite. Two dwarf guards stationed themselves both to dissuade anyone from assaulting their employer and to lend their employer consequence. No one guarded the door to the rose room assigned to the two fae.

“This is nice,” Cassandra commented as she entered the room and looked around at the deep color adorning the walls, the pale pink striped drapes, and highly polished and finely upholstered furniture that looked made from cherry. A maroon carpet adorned the floor. White trim added crisp accents at the baseboards and around the windows. Compared to the property in which they’d stayed the previous night, the room offered no grounds for complaint.

Ishjarta set their bags on the floor and started prowling, inspecting all points of egress for security.

“Do you really think we’re in danger here, Ishjarta?” she asked as she made use of a pitcher of water and basin to refresh herself and clean off the inevitable grime acquired from traveling by horse and carriage.

He raised an eyebrow and said, “I haven’t lived this long by being careless.”

She frowned. “Just how old are you, Ishjarta?”

He met her gaze without flinching and answered, “Somewhere around one hundred thousand years.”

She gasped, eyes wide. “That’s impossible!”

“What did you think immortality meant, beloved?” He shrugged. “I’ve lived a long, long time. Time, really, means nothing to one such as I.”

She paused before responding, thinking. After a moment, she said slowly, “You never mated a woman before me, right?”

He nodded.

“Then why me? Why so recently?”

“Because I finally needed a reason to live,” he replied slowly, his voice quiet. “Even a cold soul such as mine can only exist for so long in loneliness.”

“Then you finding me was just an accident, basically.”

A faint smile curled the corners of his mouth. “We fae are great believers in fate. My need to find a mate and end my eternal loneliness manifested when my true mate was available and ready to accept me.”

She cast him a look of bewilderment mixed with doubt.

“I sought the oracle and she sent me to you.”

“Oracle? Like Delphi?”

“You mean your world’s Greek legend?”

Cassandra nodded.

“The oracle in this realm is sister to the Archivist, one of the few fae older than I. He’s mated to the other moon-born’s daughter. It’s done the grumpy bastard wonders.”

She shook her head. “These titles mean nothing to me.
